Cannon Hall Camp

On Wednesday 24th April I was delighted to be present at the unveiling of a blue plaque to commemorate the location of Cannon Hall Camp in the grounds of Cannon Hall in the village of Cawthorne.

Between 1940 and 1945 it was a training camp for British and Commonwealth troops many of whom were preparing for the D-Day landings. From 1946 to 1948 it was controlled by the Polish Resettlement Corps which aided former members of the Free Polish Forces to adapt to civilian life in Britain and from then until 1952 it housed Polish families displaced by the War.

The plaque was funded by Barnsley MBC through the Community Support Fund delegated to Penistone East Ward Councillors.

The ceremonial unveiling was organised by Cawthorne Parish Council with two current members of the Polish Reserve Forces in attendance. -  Click here…

Thought for the Week
How do you tell a Communist? Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin. And how do you tell an anti-Communist? It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin
